All the paintings are made on canvas, with oil painting techniques. Sometimes modelling pastes or marble powder are used for background textures.
Vegan tools & materials, as much as possible
If at the beginning I used to choose my painting tools and materials following the advices of my academic and high school teachers, then, I decided to harmonize what I use to paint to my deep respect for animal life.
Not everyone is aware that in the materials used for painting, there are sometimes animal components, for example the glue made with rabbits skin for the canvases, bone black for black pigments, hair made brushes made with horse, hog, goat, bear, marten and other animal hairs, some insects for red pigments, etc.
Some of the paintings for sale have been made with old materials. For others and from now:
- Colors I select are of high quality and free of any animal pigment.
- Canvas are chosen for their qualities and their composition free of any animal material.
- Mediums I choose doesn't contain animal substances, not even beeswax.
- Natural hair made brushes that I bought at the beginning have been replaced by new synthetic ones, so no more animal component should be involved in my paintings.
I believe that painting animals with the approach I have, doesn't allow "using" them as materials, I believe anyway that "using" animals in any other way is wrong. For me they are not things but sensitive beings, subjects of a life, and they deserve respect.
Aiming to Vegan painting is not a choice for me but an obvious requirement.
